CB1d Flashcards
why are bacteria hard to see with light microscopes
because they are very small and mostly colorless, stains often make them show up
are bacteria prokaryotic or eukaryotic
they are prokaryotic
what do bacteria have instead of a nucleus
they have a cytoplasm that contains one large loop of chromosomal DNA, which controls most of the activities in the cell
what are plasmids
Plasmid DNA controls a few of the cell’s activities and can move from one cell to another
what do prokaryotic cells not have
they don’t have mitochondria or chloroplasts
what does the cell wall do in a bacteria cell
it provides structure and protection - it is not made from cellulose
what does the cell membrane do in a bacteria cell
controls what goes in and out of the cell and separates one cell from another
what does the cytoplasm do in a bacteria cell
the place where chemical reactions take place in the cell, the cytoplasm also contains ribosomes
what does the flagellum do in a bacteria cell
helps the cell move ( is not in all the bacteria cells
