Causes of the Berlin crisis Brain drain 1961
Brain drain - Many people in the eastern block were dissatisfied with communism
as there was free movement in Berlin another satellite states people move from east to the west in particular intellects left called the brain drain
around 4 million left east to west
This caused east berlin to lose many vital people such as doctors and scientists
Paris summit 1960
Khrushchev made an ultimatum
Berlin should be demilitarised
Berlin should become a free city
9 days before USSR shot down a spy plane and Khrushchev demanded an apology however Eisenhower refused and Khrushchev walked out causing the summit to fail
Vienna summit 1961
Paris summit failed a new one was called
JFK is now president
Kennedy first act was a speech reaffirming The Truman doctrine
Kruschev made another statement for allies to withdraw troops
Kennedy react by increasing defence spending Ussr did the same
Events building the wall of Berlin
13th of August 1961barbed wire fence erected overnight
16th of august German troops began constructing a permanent war
October face-off US and USSR tanks faced each other off a few feet from checkpoint Charlie but Kennedy and Khrushchevheld back on armed confrontation
By winter there was a solid wall23 miles long with watchtowers barbed wire guards and guard dogs
