Approach Ban - Where is it?

A

JAPAN = FAF (primarily) / OM / 1000’

  • PAR approach = 1000’
  • Some VOR approaches (eg NGO VOR 18/36 + all CTS VOR approaches) = 1000’ AFE.
  • No AJX airports use OM
    ­
    NON-JAPAN = Nominated by the AIP of that country. If there is no approach ban nominated by the state, then the approach ban point shall be the point where the aircraft descends below 1000’ AFE

USA is the only country that AJX operates to where a nominated approach ban point has been specified.

So if Japan is FAF and there are no OM countries, then other than USA, all approach ban points outside of Japan are 1000’ AFE.

(Crosswind limitations are not related to approach ban requirements)

Autoland - Which Japan airports?

A

1) Any airport which has CAT II / CAT III facilities
2) CAT II / CAT III facilities may not be provided; however an autoland is still permitted to be carried out on these runways:

HND = 22 and 34L (34R is CAT II)

NRT = 34L, 34R, 16L (16R is CAT II), so ALL runways in NRT are available for autoland ­

Note ­ Autoland is prohibited on RWY 36 at OKA and RWY 23 at RJTT due to offsets.

Crosswind for landing - how to judge limits?

A

1) At the time of receiving landing clearance,
2) If crosswind exceeds limits, confirm wind until 500ft
3) If landing clearance issued below 500’, confirm wind until 500’
4) However, the crew may still continue the approach even of the reported wind exceeds the limits provided that the crew judge that the aircraft can land safely within the normal manipulation

Which bus powers the centre autopilot?

A

Non-autoland:
The center bus ac and dc is supplied from the left main ac and dc buses.

Auto-land: (LAND 3)
When the three autopilots are armed for approach and no faults exist, the center buses transfer from the left system to the standby system. This provides three independent power sources for the three autopilot channels. At the same time, the bus tie breakers (BTB) go into an isolation mode. In the isolation mode, both BTBs cannot close simultaneously to supply power to the two main buses from one source.

A

Airplane is Fail Operational and as all three autopilots have been isolated, one autopilot remains inoperative. with the other two powered and the aircraft will autoland with two autopilots.

What will you see at the DH for CAT I if weather is on minima?

A

At a DH of 200’ AGL, the aircraft is 1200m from the touchdown point on the glide slope. RVR requirement is 550m

Working backwards from the touchdown point, 650m will give an RVR of 550m. You would expect to see the first cross bar and at least one red side row barrette.

What will you see at the DH for BASIC 1 if weather is on minima?

A

At a DH of 300’ AGL, the aircraft is 1800m from the touchdown point on the glide slope. The visibility requirement is 1600m.

Working backwards from the touchdown point, 200m will give a visibility of 1600m. 200m is halfway between the touchdown point and the threshold so you would expect to see the first 6 touchdown markers.
