Strategic things about the castles
Built royal castles or burghs as defensive features
Norman built castles were bases to attack the surrounding area
Castles were built to protect them self from hostile locals
We’re placed around the Welsh border (marshlands) to protect Normans from English and Welsh rebels living in the border regions
Symbolic features of castles
Symbolised Norman control and suppression of the anglo Saxons shown by the fact that the castles were physically higher
We’re a visible difference between the rulers and the ruled
First motte and Bailey castles were built of wood until 1070 after they were made of stone
Supervision features of castles
Were large buildings made to intimidate bully and control the local area
Castles commanded the land in every direction
Castles were often built near towns on high ground or close to water
High enough to see attackers coming defend important routes such as old Roman roads or river crossings
This made it easier to keep the population under surveillance
