Advantages of 3 gorges dam?
A
- Reduced risk of flooding downstream of the dam from one in 10 years to on in a 100
- The dam will protect over 25,000ha of farmland
- Will generate huge amount of electricity

Disadvantages of the 3 gorges dam?
A
- 1.4 million people had to be dispaced (moved) to make way for the 600km lake that has formed behind the dam
- There are expected o be problems with the huge amount of sediment that will be deposited behind the dam and watse has been a problem
- The city of Chongquing puts around 1 billion tonnes of untreated waste into the lake every year

- The reservoir boosts the local economy - it’s a popular tourist attraction because of the wilflife and recreactional facilities
- Around 6km2 of land was flooded to create the reservoir
→ this included farmland, so some farmers lost their livelihood

- Lots of recreational activites take place on and around the reservoir eg sailing, windsurfing, birdwatching and cycling
- Many jobs have been created to build and maintain the reservoir and to run the nature reserve and recrational activities
- Schools use the reservoir for educational visits
- Two villages were demolished to make way for the reservoir

- It is a Sight of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) - meanning its wildlife is protected
- Hundereds of species of birds live around the reservoir and tens of thousands of waterfowl
- A variety of habitats are found around the reservoir eg marshes, mudflats and lagoons. This means means there is biodiversity
- A large area of land was flooded to create the habitat, which destroyed some habitats
