why is Sydney so successful?

A
  • Australia’s national government have deregulated banking and finance- allowing any overseas bank to operate there.
  • it has low levels of multiple deprivation, especially in the western suburbs, but employment levels are generally high with above average incomes
  • Sydney has overseas-owned banks and TNC’s, it’s the leading financial centre for the Asia-Pacific Region.
  • Australia national gov. have focused inward migration on well-qualified professionals-skills test systems
  • Sydney has a young economically active work force, with a median age of 36 compared to the Uk’s 41

what are some problems with Sydneys success?

A

> some of Australias remote areas (the outback) are declining and losing young people and their skills

urban sprawl leads to development on urban fringe and therefor deforestation of greenfield sites which affect
habitats
increased pollution and congestion
ranked 5th most expensive city but is ranked 10th in quality of life

what’s an example of where regeneration is needed?

A

russ belt- USA

  • declined after the 1950’s and war when the US was supplying war-damaged Europe with steel to help it rebuilt.
  • china produces 49% of the worlds steel and the russ belt only produces 5%.
  • TNC’s want to make a profit so outsource manufacturing to emerging countries such as china where labour is cheaper.
  • negative multiplier effects and spiral or decline: unemployment increases, informal jobs, higher levels of crime, low quality of life.

A

Cornwall
employment is tourism based which is seasonal > low incomes result in low spending power > limited business opportunities > people can’t afford housing > councils tax low so can’t invest in services
