what is an example of how places changed over time?

A

London docklands
Function in the 19th century:
-trade of raw materials like spices, coal, timber and wool
-worlds busiest dock; closest to the city of London and contributed to economic growth of UK
by 1950’s areas began to decline:
-factories became derelict
-containerisation
-port industry declines
-size of ship increases (couldn’t facilitate)

how did London docklands re-industrialise?

A

London dockland development corporation (LDDC)-1981:
helped tackles dereliction and unemployment
they’re a government agency who are:
-property owners
-architects
-construction companies
-investors
=they had planning powers over local councils (newham/greewhich)
=companies could obtain tax breaks on new buildings to attract investors
>they improved transport connections (the dockland light railway, extension of the Jubilee line and London city airport was located close by

how did the London docklands change after the regeneration?

A

function:
employment sectors changed form primary and secondary to being dominated by the quaternary sector- meaning the area became more business dominated
demographic:
the population changed from being largely top heavy (elderly people) to bottom heavy (young people) seeking employment. the average age of Newham’s population is 31 (2011) in comparison to 40 which Is the UK’s average.
