Cartilage Flashcards
Chondrocytes
Mature cartilage cells in lacunae
- Maintain matrix
Chondroblasts
Cells that secrete cartilage matrix
Mitotic capabilities
What is the ground substance of cartilage composed up?
What are the 4 types?
Proteoglycans
- Hyaluronic acid
- Chondroitin sulfate
- Keratin sulfate
- Aggrecan
Where is Type I collagen present in cartilage matrix?
- Fibrocartilage, outer perichondrium
What are the three types of cartilage? What type of fiber does each contain?
- Hyaline: Type II Collagen
- Elastic: Type II Collagen
- Fibrocartilage: Type I Collagen
Where is Hyalin cartilage found?
Articular cartilage larynx trachea ribs embryonic development
Where is elastic cartilage found?
External ear
Epiglottis
Auditory Tube
Where is Fibrocartilage found?
Intervertebral discs
Pubic Symphysis
TMJ
What kind of cartilage lacks a perichondrium?
- Fibrocartilage
- Articular cartilages
What is the territorial matrix composed of?
Randomly arranged Type II collagen
- High GAGs
- Decreased collagen
(Moderate staining)
What is interterritorial matrix composed of?
- Surrounds territorial matrix
- Mostly collagen II, fewer proteoglycans
(Less intensely staining)
Characteristics of the perichondrium?
Dense, irregular CT
Contains vascular supply
Hyalin + elastic cartilage only
What is the source of new cartilage cells?
Perichondrium
What is the fibrous layer of the Perichondrium?
Outer layer that produces Type I collagen and elastin
Transitional zone
What is the chondrogenic later of the perichondrium?
Inner layer that differentiates into chondroblasts
- Secretes type II collagen
