cartilage Flashcards
describe the vascularity of cartilage
avascular
describe the innervation of cartilage
lacks innervation
name the 3 general components of cartilage
matrix, perichondrium, cells
what comprises the matrix of cartilage?
collagen fibers type II and proteoglycans
describe the territorial matrix
matrix just adjacent to the chondrocytes, represents matrix that is newly formed, appears more basophilic
why is territorial matrix basophilic?
proteoglycans in the inner-territorial matrix are sulfated with conveys a basophilic appearance
describe the inter-territorial matrix
matrix between isogenous groups of chondrocytes, accumulation of type II collagen
histologically, how can the territorial and inter-territorial matrices be differentiated?
terrirotial matrix is rich in (-) charged sulfated proteoglycans, so it is basophilic. inter-territorial matrix is rich in collagen type II so it is more eosinophilic
what is perichondrium?
a dense connective tissue on the exterior of cartilage
what types of cartilage have pericondrium?
hyaline and elastic
describe the 2 layers of perichondrium
outer- fibrous (fibroblasts, collagen type I, blood vessels)
inner- chrongenic cells and chondroblasts
where are chondroblasts located?
in the inner lair of perichondrium
where are chondrocytes located?
in lacunae, surrounded by matrix
where is hyaline cartilage located? (4)
articular surfaces, respiratory tract, ribs, temp skeleton for endochondral bone development
contract the location/shape of less mature vs. more mature chondrocytes
less mature- peripheral, elliptical
more mature- central, rounded
