Demands a high level of self-awareness and ability to self-direct, something that schools and universities don’t always do a great job of developing
Objective vs subjective markers of success
Objective markers of success: sales results, salary, bonuses, and promotions
Subjective markers of success: individual experience, goals, identity expression and values, interpersonal understanding
Objective markers aren’t a good way to mark success because if there are budget cuts, salary freezes, or no higher-level openings, then one becomes demoralized
What’s the problem with “waiting it out” until you are in a position in power to make a difference or stand up for your values?
The compromises one takes to climb up the ladder to a senior level position change you. The behaviors one does to climb up the ladder is generally who you are or who you have become
The higher up in a career, the more pressured one feels with regard to values. So, it makes it harder to be courageous higher up the ladder because the stakes get higher and there is more to lose.
What does the author suggest is the “only way to deal with the frustration and ambivalence” of the contradictions between success and values?
Put the idea of success and achievement into the larger context of meaning in one’s entire life. Work success is not enough; it’s just part of a person
