care giver infant interactions a03 Flashcards
are babies actions deliberate
limitation
many studies showing observations of interactions between mother/infants have shown the same pattern of interaction (Gratier 2003)
difficult to be certain based on observations , is the babies imitation deliberate or conscious
concluding we can’t draw conclusions merely from observations as we are unsure if behaviours have a special meaning
controlled observations capture fine detail
strength
observations of mother//infant interactions are generally well controlled procedures
both mother infant behaviour filmed often from multiple angles
ensures that fine details of behaviour are recorded and can be observed later
furthermore babies don’t know they are being recorded so their behaviour does not change in response to observation
strength = gives research good validity
observations does not show purpose
limitation
Feldman 2012
points out that synchrony and by implication reciprocity simply describe behaviours that occur at the same time
robust phenomena in the sense that they can be reliably observed but not useful if we do not understand their purpose
some evidence reciprocal interaction and synchrony are helpful in development of mother/infanct attachment , as well as helpful in stress responses , empathy language and moral development
