Cardiovascular Therapeutics EMQs Flashcards
What drug is an effective ventricular anti-arrhythmic agent, preferably one that will act quickly and be given IV to effect?
Best = lignocaine.
When is Quinidine indicated in the treatment of cardiac disease?
in the absence of significant structural heart disease and with a normal HR, this a reasonable candidate for attempting to convert back to sinus rhythm.
Which drug is the most effect anti-hypertensive in the cat?
Amlodipine
What drug should you give to cats that are at risk of ATE (due to HF associated with HCM)?
Clopidogrel (to inhibit clot formation although will not completely prevent thrombi formation in the first instance)
Mechanism - Amlodipine
Ca channel blocker –> vasodilation and improves BF
Mechanism - Benazepril
ACEI so used for Tx – hypertension, CHF, preventing renal and retinal complications of DM
What type of drug is digoxin?
A cardiac glycoside
Uses of digoxin?
Used in heart rhythm disorders and HF. Used to slow HR in AF.
Mechanism - Pimobendan
Calcium sensitiser and a PDE 3 inhibitor. Overall causes vasodilation and is a positive inotrope.
What is sotalol?
Non-selective competitive beta-adrenergic receptor block.
Class 3 anti-dysrhythmic. Used to treat arrhythmias and hypertension.
What is spironolactone
K-sparing diuretic
