Cardiovascular System Flashcards
cardiac tissue that makes up the heart muscles
MYOCARDIUM
sac that surrounds the heart
PERICARDIUM
four chambers divided by a median septum
2 inferior ventricles
receiving chambers
2 superior atrias
pumpin chambers
2 inferior ventricles
PULMONARY SYSTEM
The right side of the heart that pumps deoxygenated blood from heart towards the lungs
SYSTEMIC SYSTEM
left side of the heart that received oxygenated blood from lungs and pumps it towards the rest of the body
ERYTHROCYTES
red blood cells
contains HEMOGLOBIN
LEUKOCYTES
white blood cells
functions in immunity
HEMOGLOBIN
protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen from lungs to body’s tissues.
then returns carbon dioxide from tissues back to lungs
PLASMA
yellow liquid in blood
contains water, immune proteins, and other substances
SYSTOLE
contraction of atria followed by ventricles to empty blood
DIASTOLE
rest phase, when chambers relax and refills with blood
heartbeat contraction 6 steps
1 impulse in SINOATRIAL (SA) NODE
2 contraction in ATRIA which forced blood into VENTRICLES
3 impulse in ATRIOVENTRICULAR (AV) NODE
4 impulse down AV bundle
5 impulse to right and left septum
6 impulse in Purkinje fibers of VENTRICLES
flow of PULMONARY SYSTEM (from heart to lungs)
VENA CAVA > R ATRIUM > R AV (TRICUSPID) VALVE > R VENTRICLE > SEMILUNAR VALVE > PULMONARY ARTERY > LUNGS
flow of SYSTEMIC SYSTEM
from lungs to heart to rest of the body
LUNGS > PULMONRY VEINS > L ATRIUM > L AV (BICUSPID, MITRAL) VALVE > L VENTRICLE > AORTIC SEMILUNAR VALVE > AORTA > BODY
ATHEROSCLEROSIS
buildup of plaque in blood vessels
reduces flow of blood
when plaque breaks of, it can travel to smaller vessles and block
HEART ATTACK
when flow of blood to a part of heart muscle is blocked causing cardiac muscle tissue to die
HYPERTENSION
high blood pressure
which vessels carry deoxygenated blood?
PULMONARY ARTERIES and VENA CAVA
VENA CAVA
carries deoxygenated blood to heart
PULMONARY ARTERIES
carries deoxygenated blood away from heart and to lungs
why are arteries thicker and more elastic than veins?
arteries are under greater pressure from heartbeat
blood pressure reads
__/__ mm Hg
systole/diastole mm Hg
oxygenated blood passes thru which vessels?
MITRAL and AORTIC VALVES
STROKE
rupture of blood vessel in brain
