Q

Describe arteries

A
  • Blood moves away from the heart
  • Thick walls and high flexibility
  • 3 layered wall (tunica externa, tunica media, tunica interna)

Q

Describe veins

A
  • Carry blood to the heart
  • low pressure
  • the same 3 layers of tissue, but different thicknesses (less thick)
  • Valves - flow is maintained by respirtory and muscular pressure

6
Q

Describe capillaries

A
  • Pass blood from arteries - veins
  • very thin and have 1 layer of tissue to allow easy exchange
  • shunt in place of valve

Q

Describe the pulmonary circuit

A
  • carries deoxygenated blood to the lungs in arteries
  • carries oxygenated blood to the heart in veins

Q

Describe the systemic circuit

A
  • carries oxygenated blood to the body in arteries
  • carries deoxygenated blood to the heart in veins
    - aorta –> body, vena cavas –> heart

Q

Structure/position of heart

A
  • Heart is almost all cardiac muscle
  • very large mitochondria
  • striations to guide the direction of contractions
  • spontaneous depolarization
    - no impulse to pulse
    - the SA node creates its own electircla impulse, natural pacemaker
