Cardiovascular medical language Flashcards
Infraction
obstruction of the blood supply to an organ or region of tissue, typically by a thrombus or embolus, causing local death of the tissue.
Thrombus
stationary blood clot along the wall of a blood vessel, frequently causing vascular obstruction
Embolism
obstruction in a blood vessel due to a blood clot or other foreign matter that gets stuck while travelling through the bloodstream.
eg. fat or air
Atherosclerosi
disease of the arteries, where cholesterol and other lipids, inflammatory cells, and calcium accumulate within the tunica intima to form plaques that can obstruct blood flow.
ischemia
reversible situation where there is insufficient supply of blood and oxygen to the tissues to maintain normal cell function; typically due to a thrombus or embolus
Oedema
increased fluid in the intercellular tissue spaces and/or body cavities. It is clinically evident when there is an excess of fluid of between 10-30%.
