Blood vessels Flashcards
Structure of Blood vessels
3 layers
Inner- Tuncia intma
Outer- Tuncia adventitia
Middle- Tuncia Media
Tuncia intima
Inner layer of blood vessels.
Made of flattened endothelial cells
Supported by connective tissue basement membrane
Tuncia adventitia
Outer later of blood vessels
Works as a protective sheeth
Made of loose collagen and elastin fibres that attach the vessel to the surrounding tissue
Tuncia media
Middle layer of blood vessels.
Made of muscle cells with collagen fibres
systemic circulation
flow of blood around the body.
When blood is in the arteries it is at high pressure… How does this occur?
Arteries have think smooth muscle walls
allowing blood to keep high pressure while reaching around the body
Why do veins have lower pressure then arteries?
They have thin walls and are wider with less smooth muscle.
This heightens their risk of collapsing.
What controls the vasoconstriction/dilation of arteries and arterioles?
Autonomic nervous system via neurotransmitters (noradrenaline)
or via hormones (adrenaline and antiduretic hormone) from the endocrine system.
