Cardiac Medications Flashcards
What are diuretics do?
Work with kidneys to eliminate excessive body fluid by increasing theamt of Na in urine
What are the three types of diuretics?
Thiazides-
loop diuretics
K-Sparing
What do diuretics do to the plasma renin activity
increase plasma renin activity
What do alpha blockers do?
Work by blocking effects of norepinephrine resulting in in relaxation of blood vessels.
-cause vasodialation and decreased PVR resulting in decrease BP
What are alpha blockers used for?
HTN, urinary retention with BPH
What do Alpha blockers do to the HR and Q?
increase both
How do beta blockers work?
Block the effects of epinephrine (adrenaline), causing the heart to beat slower.
What are Beta blockers used for?
HTN, arrythmias, MI
What is the response to exercise while on beta blockers?
Blunted rr\esonse to activity (use RPE)
How do ACE inhibitors work?
Help relax blood vessels by preventing the production of angiotensin II (which constricts blood vessels)
What do alpha blocker drug names usually end in?
-osin
What do beta blocker drug names usually end in?
-olol
What do ACE inhibitor drugs usually end in?
-ipril
What are ACE inhibitors used for?
HF, HTN, MI
How do Angiotensin II receptor blockers work?
allow blood vessles to dialate, thus reducing blood pressure
