Cardiac Cycle Flashcards
What happens to the pressure in the left ventricle when the mitral valve closes?
It increases sharply
What is the volume of blood left in the left ventricle following diastole called?
End Diastolic volume
A stenosis of the aortic or pulmonary valves would produce a murmur in what phase?
Systole
A stenosis of the mitral or tricuspid valves would produce a murmur in what phase?
Diastole
What produces the dicrotic notch?
When blood is pushed out of the aorta, the elastic energy increases, the energy causes a small blip on the graph
What causes the ‘a’ wave?
Atrial contraction
What causes the ‘c’ wave?
The mitral valve pushing into the atrium, gives a gradual increase in pressure
What causes the ‘v’ wave?
Gradual increase in pressure due to continuing venous return - this stops as soon as the mitral valve opens
