What is the most common causative organism of vaginal candidiasis?
Candida albicans
What are the risk factors of candidiasis?
Diabetes
Immune suppresiion
Pregnancy
Reproductive age group
What are the features of vaginal candidiasis?
"thrush" Itch Thick, cottage cheese discharge Dyspareunia, dysuria Erythema, fissuring
How is vaginal candidiasis diagnosed?
Characteristic history and exam
What is the management of vaginal candidiasis?
Fluconazole PO once
Cotrimazole pessary- if pregnant
What causes BV?
Imbalance of bacteria, mainly gardnerella vaginalis
What ar the features of BV?
Asymptomatic Watery grey/uellow fishy discharge, worse after period/sex Pain Itch pH >4.5
How is BV diagnosed?
Characteristic history and exam
Vaginal discharge microscopy and pH >4.5 if needed
What is the management of BV?
Oral metronidazole for 5-7 days
Vaginal clindamycin during pregnancy
What are the complications of BV?
During pregnancy
- pre term labour
- late miscarriage
- low birthweight
