Cancers + Rule of 9s Flashcards
Basal cell carcinoma
Erythematous pearly papule
Friable
Most common skin malignancy
Doesn’t metastasize
Sun exposed areas
Basal cell carcinoma
Treatment
- Shave biopsy with ED & C
- Topical imiquimod cream
- Re-check (may need MOHS)
MOHS
Test used to biopsy potential carcinoma
Used in basal cell and squamous cell suspect
Have to get all the margins, typically a surgeon and pathologist do the MOHS
Squamous cell carcinoma
Hypertrophic scaling lesion
May develop from AK (acute keratinitis)
Metastatic potential
Sun exposed area
Squamous cell carcinoma treatment
MOHS
Shave biopsy with ED&C
Topical flurouracil
Recheck q3month
Malignant melanoma
Gross, irregular
ABCDEs
May start as a mole, LFT included with metastasis
ABCDEs of malignant melanoma
Asymmetry
Boarder irregularity
Color change
Diameter
Evolution
Treatment of malignant melanoma
- Refer to derm
- Excisional biopsy (determine depth for staging)
- Surgical excision
- Full skin and lymph node exam
- LFT an CXR (if serious)
Kaposi’s Sarcoma
Malignancy of lymphatic endothelial cells
Classic, endemic and immunosuppressive
Kaposi’s sarcoma
Classic
Symptoms and treatment
Violaceous (violet) patches and plaques of lower extremities
Excision of solitary lesion, radiation if there are multiple
Kaposi’s sarcoma
Endemic treatment
Aggressive lymph node involvement
Men w/skin lesions, children w/o
Radiation or chemo
Kaposi’s sarcoma
Immunosuppressive
cause and treatment
Similar to classic but symptoms are due to AIDS or medication
Radiation or chemo
Discontinue medications
Kaposi’s sarcoma
Pathognomonic
Associated with Herpes Virus 8
Fatal if spreads to lymph nodes
Possible if patient is immunosuppressed but they usually die of something else bc of low CD4 count
