Cancer and stem cells Flashcards
where does DNA replication take place?
in interphase (S-phase of the cell cycle)
cancer
disease caused by an uncontrolled division of abnormal cells in a part of the body
tumor
swelling of a part of the body caused by an abnormal growth of tissue
malignant tumor
cancerous growths, they are often resistant to treatment, may spread to other parts of the body
benign tumor
noncancerous, if the cells are not cancerous it won’t invade nearby tissues or spread to other areas of the body
metastasis
the development of sedentary malignant growths at a distance from a primary site of cancer
how could stem cells help with cancer?
stem cells can differentiate into many other types of cells
what are the risks of using stem cells?
-long term side effects are unknown –> may lead to cancers or foreign materials may be rejected by the body
what are the benefits of using stem cells?
-great potential to treat diseases or reversing the damage caused by disease
-could be used for testing new drugs, manufacturing specialised cells or even tissues and organs
