calorimetry and rate calculations Flashcards
1
Q
what is calorimetry
A
when food is burnted to see how much energy it contains
2
Q
what is the equation for the engery in food
A
mass of water x temperatureture change x 4.2
3
Q
how do you calcylate how much enegy a piece of food contains
A
- you need a food that will burn easily, ideally something dry
- weigh a small amount of food and then skewer it on a mounted needle
- add a set volume of water to a boiling tube, make sure it is held with a clamp. Tjod will be used to measure theamount of energy that is transferred when good is burnt
- measure the temperature of the water, then set fore tp the food using a bisnen burner flame.Make sure the bunsen isn’t near water or your test results may look incorrect
- hold the burning food under the boiling tube until it goes out. relight the good and hold it under the tube. keep doing this until the food won’t catch fire
- measure the temperature of the water
4
Q
what is rate
A
a measurement of how much something changes overtime
5
Q
what does change refer to
A
the change in the substance being measured
6
Q
what does time refer to
A
the time taken for the change to occur
7
Q
what is the calculatation for rate
A
rate = change/time or 1000/time
