Calcium Regulation Flashcards
3 hormones of calcium regualtion
PTH, Calcintonin, Calcitorol
name 5 functions of calcium
maintain bone matrix, maintain tight cell junctions, co-factor in coagulation, normal neuron excitability, intracellular signalling
where is calcium located in body?
99% bone, 0.9% ECF, 0.1% intracellular
when is PTH released and where does it act
released when serum Ca is low. acts on bone, distal kidney and intestine
how does calcitonin work?
antagonist of PTH. decrease bone resorption and increase kidney excretion
describe the biochemical pathway of vitamin D to D3. describe any points of stimulation
diet or sunlight make give vitamin D>lliver enzymes>kidney enzymes (PTH stimulates)> Calcitrol
role of calcitrol?
increase excretion from bone, increase intestinal absorption increase renal reabsorption
which regulation paralells that of calcium
phosphate
what could cause hypercalcaemia and what is a likely result
hyperparathyroidism (hypersecretion of PTH). can cause osteoporosis
