bone histology Flashcards
type of collagen in hyaline cartilage?
II
describe elastic cartilage and 2 places it can be found
hyaline cartilage with addition of elastin. ear & epiglottis
describe fibrocartilage and which type of collagen is present. Where is it found?
dense connective tissue with isolated islands of cartilage. Collagen type 1.
IV discs, menisci.
4 types of bone cells?
osteo……progentior, cyte, blast and clast
where are osteoprogenitor cells found and what is their function?
periosteum & endosteum. give rise to new osteoblasts
what is osteoid, what is it made from and which cell makes it?
ECM of bone, Collagen type I, Osteoblasts
what is the significance of osteocyte loss?
bone resoprtion
histological feature of osteoclast?
multi-nucleate Giant cell
marker of osteoclast activity?
Tartrate-resistant acid phosphotase
origin of osteoclast? which cell type related to? what happens when not required?
from bone marrow, relative of macrophages, apoptose when not required
2 types of bone development?
membranous and endochondral
origin of membranous bone and 3 examples.
mesenchyme. Skull, flat bones & calvicles
describe endochondral bone formation?
cartilage laid down>blood vessels invade brining osteoprogenitors
describe the 5 layers of the growth plate.
- Resting - normal hyaline cartilage
- Proliferative - dividing chondrocytes
- Maturing - chondrocytes mature
- Hypertrophic - chondrocytes hypertrophy and die
- Ossification - degenerating cartilage is destroyed and new bone laid.
what is a chondrocyte?
only cells found in cartilage
