C9 A focus on adulthood AOS1 Flashcards
Perceptions
The way in which something is regarded, understood, or interpreted.
List factors that can influence or impact individual perceptions
Perceptions can be impacted by factors such as other people’s opinions, the way the media portrays people in the lifespan stage, and a person’s values.
Early adulthood perception
Perceptions are similar to those of youth and perceived as being at their physical peak, being a responsible citizen and contributing to their society by being productively employed. Youth may perceive adults of this age as being judgmental and lacking understanding.
Middle adulthood perception
Some similarities in perceptions with early adulthood, but they are viewed as having passed their physical peak. Perceived as experienced and viewed as their parental roles if any. Youth typically perceive this group as being ‘out of touch’.
Late adulthood perceptions
Perceived as being wise and experienced, as a source of information and expertise, resistant to change, and complaining frequently. Negative perceptions are influenced by the media (e.g. trouble learning new skills).
Respect
The concern or consideration for the feelings, wishes, opinions, rights and needs of others.
Belonging
The sense of feeling a part of something, connectedness to other people or being involved in a community.
Affection
The feeling and showing of emotions of love, support and care towards a person.
Describe a respectful relationship
Respectful relationships allow each person to make their own choices, foster feelings of self-worth and nurture happiness, and allow each person to feel safe and to be themselves without fear or without being put down or hurt.
