C6.2.5 Flashcards
1
Q
What is crude oil?
A
A complex mixture of hydrocarbons formed from the dead remains of organisms othat live over millions of years ago
2
Q
What does crude oil mostly consist of?
A
Alkanes
3
Q
What is used to separate hydrocarbons?
A
Fractional distillation is used. This works because different alkanes have different boiling points.
4
Q
What happens as the number of carbon atoms increase in an alkane molecule?
A
- The larger the molecule
- The stronger the intermolecular forces
- The higher the boiling point
5
Q
What are fractions?
A
Substance separated during fractional distillation
6
Q
Describe fractional distillation:
A
- Crude oil is heated
- Vapours enter the bottom of the column
- Column has a temperature gradient
- Vapours rise
- Vapours cool as they rise
- Vapours condense when they reach their boiling point
- Liquids fed out of the column
- Gases exit from the top
- Bitumen exits from the bottom
