C4 1-5 vital Flashcards
***List the forms of epithelial tissue.
covering/lining, and glandular
***List the functions of epithelial tissue.
Protection, absorption, filtration, excretion, secretion, sensory reception
***What are the special characteristics of epithelial tissue?
Polarity, (Apical/basal) avascular but innervated, regeneration, (mitosis) Cellularity, (Tightly packed cells) specialized Contacts (tight/gap/desmosomes), supported by connective tissue (always!)
***basement membrane
basal lamina + reticular lamina
***What do endothelium and mesothelium do?
Simple squamous epithelium that lines chambers and passageways that do not open to outside world and inner surface of heart and blood vessels
***What is a gland?
One or more cells that make and secrete a particular product
***Exocrine gland?
Have ducts and release their products to the outside. (mucus, tears, sweat, oil, enzymes, milk)
***Endocrine gland?
Ductless, release hormones into interstitial fluid and then into bloodstream
***4 major tissue types?
Nervous, muscle, connective, epithelial
***tissue
group of cells, similar in structure, carrying out a specific function
***Epithelial tissue
A sheet of cells that covers a body surface or lines a body cavity
***What are the types of connective tissues?
Proper (loose/dense),
supporting (cartilage/bone),
fluid (blood/lymph)
**What are the common characteristics of connective tissue?
mesenchyme (common origin - gives rise to all other ct.s),
degrees of vascularity (cartilage avascular –> blood vascular),
extracellular matrix (packing material)
***Describe the structural elements of connective tissue?
Ground substance (viscous substance with proeoglycans/glycoproteins),
cells (i.e. osteoblasts/adipocytes),
fibers (provide support, made of protein)
***Types of loose connective tissue?
Areolar, adipose, reticular (packing materials)
