Toward or at the midline of the body, on the inner side of
Lateral
Away from the midling of the body, on the outer side of
Intermediate
Between a more medial and a more lateral structure
Proximal
Closer to the origin of the body part of the point of attachment of a limb to the body trunk
Distal
Farther from the origin of a body part or the point of attachment of a limb to the body trunk
Superficial
Toward or at the body surface
Deep
Away from the body surface, more internal
Axial
head, neck, trunk
Appendicular
Limbs
Sagittal (median/midsagittal) plane
Vertical, divides body into left and right
Frontal (coronal) plane
Vertical, divides the body into anterior and posterior
Transverse (horizontal) plane
Horzontal, divides the body into superior and inferior
Dorsal body cavity
Protects nervous system. Cranial cavity encases the brain, Vertebral/spinal cavity encloses the spine
Ventral body cavity
Includes thoracic and abdominopelvic cavity
Thoracic cavity
Includes pleural cavity which encases lungs and mediastinum which contains the pericardial cavity which encloses the hear and surrounds remaining thoracic organs (esophagus/trachea)
Abdominopelvic cavity
Superior portion is the abdominal cavity (digestive viscera), inferior is the pelvic cavity which contains the bladder, reproductive organs and rectum
parietal serosa
lines cavity walls
visceral serosa
covers organs
parietal pericardium
lines the pericardial cavity
visceral pericardium
covers the heart
parietal pleurae
lines the thoracic cavity
visceral pleurae
covers the lungs
parietal peritoneum
lines the abdominopelvic cavity
visceral peritoneum
covers most organs in the abdominopelvic cavity
