C3. P9 Flashcards
What is signal detection theory?
Our ability to detect and perceive sensory signals will changes as a function of our states
What are response criteria?
Factors which determine our sensitivity for detecting various stimuli
What is figure-ground differentiation?
The process by which the brain focuses on a limited number of things by differentiating them from the ground
What do we perceive shape through?
Contrast
What is gestalt psychology?
Human perception involves the brain’s tendency to be self-organizing and to perceive the world in terms of meaningful wholes
What are the four gestalt grouping principles?
Similarity, proximity, continuity, and closure
What is the phi phenomenon?
When humans perceive motion in inanimate objects that are presented in rapid succession
What are perceptual constancies?
Mental processes through which some property of an external object (e.g., color; size; shape) is experienced as constant despite the fact that external conditions have changed bottom-up sensory information
What is color constancy?
The brain’s tendency to hold color perception constant even as the amount of light varies
What is shape constancy?
The brain’s capacity to understand that objects in the world maintain their size and shape even when incoming sensory information suggests notable changes (using memory)
What are perceptual sets?
The tendency for perception to be influenced by internal factors
