C2 - Transition Metals + Metallic Bonding Flashcards
Describe metals in terms of its structure…
LAYERS of positive metal ions are held together in a lattice structure by DELOCALISED electrons
Name four properties of metals…
They are:
- Malleable (bendy)
- Ductile (stretchy)
- High melting points
- High boiling points
When a strong force is applied to a metal what occurs? Why is this?
When a strong force is applied to a transition metal, because of the strong force between the metal ions and the delocalised electrons, the metal spreads rather than breaking due to the presence of layers.
Why can transition metals conduct electricity?
Because many delocalised electrons are present in order to induce a current.
Why do transition metals have high melting and boiling points?
Because of the attraction between the ions and the delocalised electrons being very strong.
