C2 - Electronic Configuration, Ionic Bonding And Ionic Compounds Flashcards
What is electronic configuration?
How electrons are arranged within an atom
Which number of the electronic configuration number tells us the group number?
The last one This represents the number of electrons on the outer shell
How do we tell which period an element is in from its electronic configuration number?
The amount of numbers As this is the amount of shells their are
How do you know whether an element becomes negatively or positively charged once it becomes an ion?
The charge is positive if it loses electrons as there are more positive electrons now The charge is negative if it gains electrons as there are more negative electrons now
What is the term used to describe two ionic compounds that cancel each other out by transferring electrons?
Electronically neutral
Why do some compounds have brackets round their symbols in equations?
As there are two different elements within that compound
List the properties of ionic compounds… (5)
Atoms within ionic substances cannot move at room temperature when they are solid and therefore cannot conduct electricity
However they can conduct electricity when they are molten as the strong electrostatic attractions between the atoms have been broken
Ionic substances can also conduct electricity when they are in an aqueous solution, this is because dissolving the element in water enables the ions to break away from their fixed positions in a lattice structure
Ionic bonds have strong electrostatic attractions between oppositely charged ions. Therefore a lot of energy is needed to break them. This means that ionic compounds have high melting points and boiling points
This means that they are usually solid when at room temperature
