C2 - Noble Gases Flashcards
What is the position of these noble gases in the periodic table of elements?
Group zero (over on the right)
Describe the three main properties of noble gases
They are inert (unreactive)
They have no charge
Each noble gas has a full outer shell
What are Xenon and Argon used for?
Used inside filament lamps instead of air to stop the hot filament from reacting with oxygen and burning
What is argon used for?
Inside fire extinguishing systems as it is non-flammable
Used in welding to form a blanket over hot metal to stop it from reacting with oxygen from the air
What is helium used for?
Used in welding to form a blanket over hot metal to stop it from reacting with oxygen from the air
Helium also has a low density so it is used in balloons and airships
What is neon used for?
In fluorescent lamps (advertising) as it produces light when a current passes through it.
