- some may not be able to maintain or keep up with renting their homes which raises concerns
- some may only have a state pension and can’t pay household bills

- more freedom and no work stress
- may result in loss of income and purpose
- engage in physical leisure activities
How does religion, culture and beliefs affect a person ageing?
- some may maintain a happy, positive outlook on life
- some Asian cultures find it important to look after older relatives
What is the Social Disengagement Theory?
- The idea that it is natural for older people to disengage and remove themselves from society as they age
What would limit social interaction for an older person?
- Ill Health – Poor mobility meaning they can’t get out
- Geographical Mobility – Family members may have moved away
- Retirement- less contact with people
What is the evaluation of the Social Disengagement Theory?
-The theory is outdated (1961) as there was no phones or cars which there is now which increases interaction
- The majority of older people remain socially active with friends
What is the Activity Theory?
- Older people that stay physically and socially active will have a better quality of life
What is the evaluation of the Activity Theory?
- Research shows that staying active improves and promotes a more positive wellbeing
- Practical applications in care homes
