C2 - The periodic table 1️⃣✅ Flashcards
What are group 1 elements called?
Alkali metals
Why are alkali metals called alkali metals?
Because they react with water to form an alkali
What is an alkali?
A chemical that can dissolve in water, combine with acids to form salts, and make acids less acidic
How can you tell what group an element is in?
By the number of electrons in its outer shell
Why are group 1 elements very reactive?
Because there is only 1 electron in their outer shell, they only need to loose one electron to react
Reactivity __________ down group 1
increases
Why does reactivity increase as you go down group one?
Reactivity increases down group 1 because as you move down the group the atoms get larger therefore the outer electron gets further from the nucleus and the attraction between the nucleus and outer electron gets weaker – so the electron is more easily lost.
The melting/ boiling point ________ down group 1
decreases
What are the group 7 elements called?
The halogens
How can you tell what row a element is in?
By its number of shells
What are the halogens?
The halogens are non-metals that exist as molecules made up of pairs of atoms
The reactivity ___________ down group 7
decreases
The melting/ boiling point ________ down the group
(group 7)
increases
What are group 0 elements called?
The Nobel gasses
What are the properties of the Nobel gasses?
- they have full outer shells with 8 electrons, so do not need to loose or gain electrons
- they are very unreactive so exist as single atoms as they dont bond to form molecules
- boiling points increase down the group
