C2 Flashcards
What are chemical elements placed in, in the periodic table?
The atomic number(protons)
Why do elements in the same group react in similar ways?
They have the same number of electrons on their outermost shell
How do you know the number of electrons on the outermost shell?
Look at the group it is in, elements in group 2 will have 2 electrons, elements in group 6 will have 6 electrons on the outermost shell
What is the main difference of metals and non metals?
Metals conduct electricity
Non-metals are electrical insulators (doesn’t easily transmit energy)
Where are non metals found in the periodic table?
Top right hand corner
What groups form negative ions ?
Group 5 (gain 3 electrons) Group 6 (gain 2 electrons) Group 7 (gain 1 electron)
They then have the electronic structure of the noble gas at the end of their period.
Why are noble gases very stable?
They have a full outermost shell of electrons.
Gove me an example of a pattern of the noble gasses?
Boing points increase as you go down the row
What determines an elements properties?
The number of electrons in the outermost shell.
Why are noble gases so stable?
They have very stable electron arrangements
The atoms of metals tend to ______ electrons
Lose
The atoms of non-metals tend to______ gain electrons.
Gain
The group number in the periodic table=
Number if electrons in the outermost shell.
Non metals are______
Electrical insulators
Metals are ________
Conductors
How reactive are the alkali metals?
Very reactive
What happens to the reactivity of group 1 (alkai metals) as you go down the group and why?
-the reactivity increases as you go down the group because
as the atoms electronic strucutres get larger the elecrostatic forces of attraction with the nucleus gets weaker because the distance between the outer electron and nucleus increases(electrons shielding effect).
As you go down the group, the positive charge is greater becasue there is more protons in the nucleus
What happens to the reactivity of group 7(halogens) as you go down the group and why?
Reactivity decreases as you go down the group.
Going down the group the nucleus has a less attractive force because there are more shells of electrons, it is therefore harder to attract incoming electrons making it more reactive
Halogens are _________ ________ of heat and elecricity
Poor conductors
Group 1 form ______ ions
Positive 1+
Group 7 form ________ ions
Negative 1-
