3.5 Flashcards
Which bonding dhares electrons?
Convalent or ionic
Convalent
Why do Ionic compounds conduct electricity as liquids but not as soilds?
Ionic compounds do not conduct electricity because the ions are held firmly in place. They cannot move to conduct electricity. When melted, the charged ions are free to move. Hence, they conduct electricity when melted but not as a soild.
What does a simple molecular substance mean?
Consists of molecules in which the atoms are joined by strong covalent bonds.
-gases, liquids or solids with low melting points, and low boiling points.
What does molten mean?
an object that’s reduced to liquid form by heating
Do ionic bonds conduct electricity?
Only when molten or dissolved in water
Not as a soild
What is convalent bonding?
A convalent bond is a chemical bond that invloves sharing electrons between atoms. This is shared pairs of elctrons and these is a balanced attractive and repuslsive force between atoms.
