1.2/1.3 Flashcards
What is the law of conservation of mass?
The total mass lf the products formed in a reaction is equal to the total mass of the reactants
What are the techniques for seperating mixtures?
- filtration
- crystalisation
- Distillation
- chromatogrpahy
What is crystalisation?
Getting pure salt: heat to evaportate water until the solution is at the point of crystalisation(when small crystals appear on the edge of the solution.
- extract crystals
- left of the saturated solution is left to evaporate at room temperature
(Sperates soluble from solvent)
What is distillation do?
Allows you to collect the solvent(water).
Solution heated and boiled to evaporte solvent. Vapour enters a condenser after rising. This glass tube cools the vapour and condensed back into a liquid for collection. Any solids will remain at the start point
What are the properties of mixtures?
- no fixed composition
- no chemical bonds
- elements and compounds are easier to sperate
Soluble
Able to be dissolved
Solvent
Able to dissolve other substances
