c14-Org Flashcards
functional group of alcohols?
-OH, hydroxyl
are alcohols more or less volatile than alkanes?
less volatile
what are two physical differences between alcohols and alkanes
alcohols have a higher melting points
alcohols have greater water solubility
however these differences become much smaller as the length increases
why are alcohols liquid at room temp
they have hydrogen bonds between each of the molecules that hold the molecules together in the liquid state
why are alcohols soluble in water
they are completely soluble in wtaer as hydrogen bonds form between the polar -OH group of the alcohol and the water molecules
-as the chain increases, the influence of the OH group becomes relatively smaller and solubility decreases
can alcohols undergo combustion
yes they can undergo complete combustion in a plentiful supply of oxygen
what can primary alcohols be oxidised to make
-aldehydes
-carboxylic acids
what are secondary alcohols oxidised too
ketones
what is dehydration
any reaction in which a water molecule is removed from the starting material
what is the short process od dehydration and what is the product
and alcohol is heated under reflux in the prescence of an acid catalyst
prduct is an alkene
