c13-Org Flashcards
what are stereoisomers
stereoisomers have the same structural formula but a different arrangement of the atoms in space
why are alkenes much morr eactive than alkanes
they have a pi bond
they have a double bond
where is electron density concentrated in the pi bond and why does this make it easier to break
-electron density is above and below the plane of the sigma bond
-this means that the pi electrons are more exposed than the electrons in the sigma bond, therefore a pi bond readily breaks and alkenes undergo addition reactions relatively easily
name 4 addition reactions of the alkenes
-hydrogen in the prescence of a nickel catalyst
-halogens
-hydrogen halides
- steam in the prescence of an acid catalyst
