Aromatic Compounds Flashcards
What is benzene
A cyclic, planar molecule with the formula C6H6
What is the bonding of benzene
Each carbon is bonded to 2 other carbons and 1 hydrogen atom. The final lone electron is in a p-orbital which sticks out above and below the plane of the ring
What do the lone elctrons in the p-orbitals do?
The lone electrons combine to form a delocalised ring system of electrons
What is special abt the bonds in benzene
All the same length of 139pm. This is due to the delocalised electron structure
What is the bond length of a single c-c bond and a double c-c bond
S: 154pm
D;: 134pm
Proof that benzene is more stable
Lower hydrogenation enthalpy than kekules structure
What are arenes
Aromatic compounds that contain a benzene ring
