Q

what happened during the trial of Jesus?

A

Jesus was taken for trial under the Jewish council Sanhedrin. They condemned him for blasphemy as he claimed to be the son of God. He was taken before the Roman Governor Pontius Pilate who tried him for treason but couldn’t find him guilty. So he made the crowd choose whether to release him or a Jewish freedom fighter. In the end Pilate washed his hands in front of the crowd to show his innocence and the responsibility was on the crowd. They said “his blood is on us and our children”.

Q

explain why Pontius Pilate (the Roman ruler) would have thought claiming to be ‘King of the Jews’ was worse than claiming to be ‘the Son of God’

A

‘KING of the Jews’ would have been considered a threat to Roman authority. To establish yourself as King, and have people treat you as such, would be worrying to the Romans in case the ‘king’ led a rebellion and tried to overthrow the Roman rulers.
The Romans didn’t care about blasphemy as they didn’t believe in the same God as the Jews, so this was not a concern for them.
