how many books of creation are there and what are they called?
genesis 1 and genesis 2-3
what is in genesis 1
provides an overview and basic information - eg God created humans in his own image.
what is in genesis 2-3
provide further detail on the why and how - eg God created Adam first, using dust from the ground and then breathing a soul into him. Then created Eve from Adam’s rib, to be a helper for Adam. Then created Eve from Adam’s rib, to be a helper for Adam.
what are the similarities between both genesis?
Show God’s omnipotence in creation
Have the garden of eden
Adam is made form the dust o the earth
God rested on the 7th day
what are the differences between both genesis?
G1 - man and woman were created at the same time G2-3 - man was first
G1 - man was created last G2-3 - man was created first before other beings
Woman were created as man’s helper and not as an equal
what are the 3 divergent Christian interpretations about genesis?
liberals, conservatives, literals
how do literals interpret the genesis?
the bible is the exact word of god, creation happened exactly in 6 days etc.
what theories do literals not accept about creation?
big bang and Evolution theories
how do liberals interpret the genesis?
the bible is about god, people wrote it based on religious experiences and understanding, the main point remains the same, god created it but it is not exact
what theories do liberals accept?
scientific theories big bang and Evolution theories
how do conservatives interpret the genesis?
the bible is the word of god but not exactly. The writers were inspired by god so it may be metaphorical, genesis 2-3 was a commentary on genesis 1 then a diff story
what is the role of the Word and spirit?
w/o the word the universe would not have existed
what is the Word and spirit?
in John’s gospel it is Jesus, it is a part of God and helped God in creation
where can the role of the word and spirit be seen in the bible?
when john says “nothing was made that has been made”
why is creation important for Christians today?
shows God’s goodness and love for humanity, to create something that he sees ‘is good’ for us
shows Christians that humans have a special and unique position, we are the only ones made in the image of God
It teaches Christians how humans have more rights than other species (made special), but also more responsibility (to be stewards)
