Q

Redox

A

A reaction in which an oxidation and reduction takes place is called a redox reactions.
Electrolysis is a redox reaction- REDuction happens at the cathode (red cat) and OXidation happens at the anode (an ox).

Q

Mg + O2→ MgO

A

●Here the Mg is being oxidised as it is bonding to more oxygen.
●If we look at just the magnesium (removing the oxygen)
●Mg → Mg2+
●The Mg goes from being an Mg2+ ion to an atom (loosing electrons) this is an oxidation reaction.

Q

FeSO4 + Mg → MgSO4 + Fe

A

●Using our knowledge of displacement reactions: More reactive metals will become the ion in solution. They prefer to be oxidised.
●The more reactive a metal is the more easily it will be oxidised.
●Less reactive metals are resistant to oxidation.
●Metals being isolated from their ore is ALWAYS a reduction reaction.
