What is urbanisation?
Urbanisation is the growth in the proportion of a country’s population living in urban areas
What is the rate of urbanisation like in developed, developing countries?
Developed: - Very slow rate of urban growth - Urbanisation happened earlier Developing: - Fastest rates of urbanisation in the world - Urbanisation happening recently
How is urbanisation predicted to change?
Urbanisation is predicted to continue at a fast rate in regions with a large rural population, and by 2050 majority if people will be in urban areas
What is a megacity?
A megacity is an urban area with over 10 mil people living there
What is the current arrangement of megacities?
There are currently 28 megacities, 2/3 of which are in developing and emerging countries. Most are in Asia
What was the arrangement of megacities in 1950?
In 1950 there were only 2 megacities in Tokyo and New York. The largest and most influential cities were in developed countries
What is Urban primacy?
Urban promacy is when one city dominates the country it is in
What is a ‘primate city’?
‘Primate cities’ are cities with a much larger population than other cities in the country, dominating the country they are in
How can ‘primate cities’ influence the country economically? (Investment/Migration/Transport)
Investment - Businesses often locate there encouraging investment (in infrastructure/services) Migration - Lots of jobs are there so people move there to find work Transport - International airports and ports are often located there whoch encourages more migration and investment
Why do ‘primate cities’ have political influences?
Governments and headquarters of large business are often located in primate cities giving them political influence
What does the political influence of a primate city mean for the rest of the country?
A primate city’s political influence means that decisions about development favour the city rather than the rest of the country
