C-108 Flammable Liquid Fires Flashcards
Approach a flammable liquid spill or fire from ____. Isolate the area and attempt to ____: ____ or ____. Hazard zones shall be established and fire fighters shall utilize proper personal protective equipment (PPE).
- uphill and/or upwind if possible
- identify the type of liquid involved
- hydrocarbon or polar solvent
Determine if the spill or fire is static or moving. If the liquid is moving, attempt to _____
- divert the spill away from structural exposures, storm sewers, waterways, and people, or confine the liquid using diking materials if it can be done safely.
Consider the use of ____ at flammable spills to help mitigate the danger of the spilled fuel.
absorbent
If the amount of spilled fuel is greater than ____, request the Hazardous Materials Team to respond.
five gallons
Before mounting a foam attack, an ____ must be on scene and available to extinguish the fire.
adequate quantity of foam concentrate
Aqueous film forming foam (AFFF) can be utilized as follows:
- Intended for use at a proportioning rate of 3% (3 parts AFFF concentrate to 97 parts water) on Class B hydrocarbon type fuels such as gasoline, kerosene, diesel, etc.
- AFFF is not intended for use on fuels which are polar solvent/water miscible such as alcohols, ketones, esters, etc.
- Alcohol resistant AFFF is the appropriate extinguishing agent for polar solvent fires. Sufficient quantities of AR-AFFF are housed at Fire Station 6 and can be requested by the Company or Chief Officer.
After extinguishment of all flammable liquid fires, the Hazardous Materials Team should monitor for ____. If necessary, ____ will be applied. The Hazardous Materials Team can also provide additional ____ for spill mitigation.
- lower explosive limits (LELs)
- additional foam blankets
- absorbent
