Burns Flashcards
What is a first-degree burn?
superficial
affect only outer layer of skin (epidermis)
long-term tissue damage rare
What is a second-degree burn?
partial thickness
epidermis and lower layer of skin (dermis)
What is a third-degree burn?
full thickness
destroy epidermis and dermis and may go to subcutaneous tissue
How long does a skin graft typically take to heal? What can happen after it heals?
7-10 days post-op
then ROM can be assessed
What are some burn scar management techniques?
Gel pad inserts
Massage- with moisturizer
List the phases of wound healing for burns.
inflammatory phase (3-10 days post onset)
proliferative phase (3rd day until healed)
maturation phase (3rd week post onset to 2+ years after onset or surgery)
List the medical management phases for burns.
emergent phase
resuscitative phase
acute phase
rehabilitative phase
What burn phases involve OT intervention?
acute and rehabilitative
When does the acute phase of burn healing start?
72 hours onward
What are OT goals during acute burn phase?
reduce edema
prevent loss of mobility
What are OT goals during rehabilitative burn phase?
scar management
prevent contractures/deformity
improve mobility
increase activity tolerance
