16
Q

Why is it believed that the bronze age people in Ireland has contact with England?

A

the production of bronze, not enough tin in ireland to justify the amount of bronze products produced

17
Q

What metal did Ireland have in abundance at this time

18
Q

Name the two new inovative and inventive techniques developed at this time

A

Mining and casting

19
Q

Where did casting take place

20
Q

what were these cast ingots and axe heads used for

A

it was a way of dividing the copper or bronze into equal quantities for distributing and carrying

21
Q

where was copper found in Ireland

A

mostly found in the southern counties

22
Q

where was Tin sourced

A

some deposits in wicklow - mostly found from cornwall, england

23
Q

what material was used for fecorative objects, why?

A

gold beared the resembalance to the shine of the sun, the sun continued to be worshiped

24
Q

how and where was gold sourced

A

sourced from place deposits. The river bed were panned - valuable metals separated from other substanced by agitation with water on the river banks

25
name and explain the two properties of metal and what this allowed the goldsmiths to do
***Malleable*** nuggets of gold hammered into thin sheets, sheet metal, similar apperance to foil.Prodomiant technique in early bronze age ***Ductible*** allowed gold to be streched into thin wire
26
Name two forms made by the goldsmiths during the early bronze age
sundiscs, circular sheets made of Gold Lunula - cresent shaped pieces
27
Were early bronze age forms decorated or not decorated
sometimes decorated, sometimes left plain
28
describe early bronze age decoration
abstract geometric shaped
29
what does abstract mean
does not represent anything in the natural world
30
list the three phases of the bronze age with dates
early broze age 2500-1300 BC Middle bronze age 1500-1200 BC Late bronze age 1200-500 BC
31
what two advancements do these phases reflect
new developments in metal working techniques, it allowed much more dramatic decoration to be created
32
Why is it though that the bronze age people had spritual beliefs
the common /ritualistic practice of deposition of hoards in sacred places
33
describe types of metalwork and decoration and techniques that develop over the early bronze age
Gold primarily decorated in a thin sheet form. artefacts remained comparativily plain and simple
34
describe types of metalwork and decoration and techniques that develop over the middle bronze age
metalworks continued to thrive and develop better molding and casting techniques
35
describe types of metalwork and decoration and techniques that develop over the late bronze age
large skilled range of metal working techniques, such as riviting and soildering
36
name, describe, and give an example of each of the 2 metalworking techniques
Incision- using a sharp metal tool to cut into or engrave the surface of the metal object. EG Gorget : Gleninsheen Gold collar Repousse - Motifs were pressed on or gently hammered into the back of the metal leaving the design in relief on the surface. Eg gold armlets
37
name, describe and give an example of each of the 4 metalwork techniques
**Ribbon and Flange twisting** Lenghts of metal are beaten into square or triangular shapes or a ribbon of metal is beaten so the centre is thicker. eg. gold ribbon torc **Casting** stone was carved to create the desired mold, molten gold then poured in. eg solid gold cast dress fastener **Soldering**Metal that is fused to another pieve of metal using molten metal eg lock rings **Riveting** metal sheets are laid on top of eachother and a rivit is hammered from both sides them secured onto place eg bronze age cooking pot
