Causes of bronchiolitis
Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) (Most common)
Adenovirus
Mycoplasma
Parainfluenza (Least common)
Clinical manifestations of bronchiolitis
Hypoxemia
Hypercapnea
Tachypnea
Cyanosis
Nasal flaring
Atelectasis
Prolonged expiration (wheezing)
Fine end inspiratory crackles
Hyperinflated lungs
Respiratory acidosis
Subcostal & Intercostal retraction on chest
Nasal congestion
Rhinorrhea
Dry wheezy cough
Some Edema
Large chest circumference
Complications
Air trapping
Respiratory Failure
Diagnosis
Chest X-ray
- hyperinflation
- atelectasis
- interstitial infiltrates
- peribronchial thickening
Prominent sternum
Displaced liver (downward)
