Bronchiectesis Flashcards
1
Q
Pathophysiology
A
an abnormal and irreversible dilation, distortion and possible inflammation of the airways
- result of infection, causing acute inflammation
- prolonged inflammatory process results in destroyed MCC and cartilagenous structures
- stimulates excessive mucus production
- causes airway destruction and MCC dysfunction
- results in cycle of infection and colonisation of lungs
2
Q
Clinical Implications
A
impaired airways clearance airflow limitation impaired gas exchange dyspnoea reduced exercise tolerance musculoskeletal dysfunction
3
Q
Clinical Features
A
chronic cough
sputum production - typically strong smelling
frequent lower respiratory tract infections
ausc has widespread, coarse and expiratory crackles
4
Q
Medical Management
A
antibiotics anti-inflammatories bronchodilators mucolytics frequent vaccinations!!! surgical resection or transplant
5
