Medical advances, 1951-79
A
many huge advances in medicine are made between 1951 and 1979 including:
- kidney transplants from 1960 with it costing 3% of the NHS budget by 1990
- the introduction of the pill in the 1960s and 1970s leads to a greater sexual freedom. Increased from only 100,000 in 1962 to over a million by 1969
- abortion act 1967 made abortion legal up until 28 weeks
- first hip replacement in 1962 with CT scanner from 1970s

The challenge of medical advancement

- it was expensive and only cost more as time went on, in 1950 it was 4.1% of GNP whereas in 1990 14%
- medical science creates new expenses such as antibiotics. In 1948 only 1 whereas in 1968 there were 33
- people became dependent
- dandruff syndrome
- huge back lot of cases so diff to reorganise and fund
- NHS staff doubles from 5,00,000 to 1 million between 1948 and 1979

What is dandruff syndrome
A
People would come to the doctors for things as little as dandruff which then used funding that could have been used to treat more serious cases
